DRAMA (Grades 1-12)

 

Acting FUNdamentals: Create-a-Play!

Guided by a particular theme, students use their imaginations, bodies and voices to create characters and tell stories through acting and improvisation. This class fosters a nurturing environment for students to build self-confidence, cultivate imagination, strengthen problem-solving skills and make new friends. Their ideas will be crafted into a real play that will debut on the Metropolis stage at the end of session Showcase!

Grades 1-2 Tuesdays 4:30-5:30pm

Acting Stars: Monologues from the Screen

Get ready to bring your favorite movie and TV scenes come to life in our own classroom while building your character development and storytelling skills! Students will learn skills that will allow them to transform into some of their favorite characters and put themselves in their shoes through character analysis and constructive scene studies. Their scenes will be performed on the Metropolis stage at the end of session Showcase!

Grades 3-5 Tuesdays 5:30-6:30pm

Acting Ensemble: Play Performance

Students will start with a script and learn all about what it takes to take a play from the page to the stage! Along with learning the fundamentals of acting, students develop skills in physicality, vocal techniques and characterization through exercises and improvisation. This class focuses on all of the components of putting on a production of a play. From auditions, to casting, to rehearsals, to a finished product, students will learn their roles while also learning more about the entire creative process behind a play. Their short play will be performed on the Metropolis stage at the end of the session Showcase!


Grades 6-12 Saturdays 12:30-2pm $325

MUSICAL THEATRE (Grades 1-12)

 

Broadway PLAYers: Disney on Stage!

Guided by the magic of Disney, students will develop skills in singing, dancing and acting through selections from Disney stage productions. Students learn the basics of storytelling and character development through song and dance. This class fosters a positive environment for students to build self-confidence, make new friends, and strengthen skills in coordination, spatial awareness, repetition, memorization and facial expression. Students will perform what they’ve worked on in class on the Metropolis stage at the end of session Showcase!

Grades 1-2 Saturdays 10:00-11:00am

Full Session (February 1st - May 16th) - $250

 

Broadway Stars: Shrek

“What makes us special makes us strong.” Students will develop fundamental singing, dancing, and acting techniques while adapting Shrek The Musical into a short performance for the Metropolis stage! This class fosters a positive environment for students to build self-confidence, make new friends, and strengthen skills in coordination, spatial awareness, repetition, memorization and facial expression. Students will perform what they’ve worked on in class on the Metropolis stage at the end of session Showcase!

Grades 3-5 Wednesdays 5:30-6:30pm OR Saturdays 11:00am-12:00pm

Broadway Ensemble: Pasek & Paul

Dear Evan Hansen. The Greatest Showman. La La Land. Students will work on challenging vocal arrangements and dance routines to songs by two of the most influential musical composers of the past 5 years. Students will improve their stage presence, strengthen skills in harmony singing, learn basic and advanced dance vocabulary, and gain more knowledge about audition preparation. No prior experience necessary--just a love for musical theatre! Students will perform what they’ve worked on in class on the Metropolis stage at the end of session Showcase!

Grades 6-12   Wednesdays 6:00-7:30pm   OR   Saturdays 12:30-2pm

IMPROV (Grades 3-12)

Explore the fun and fast-paced world of improvisation! Students learn to take risks, think on their feet, stay focused and be ready for anything! Students will work on creating original characters, interesting stories, hilarious scenes and supporting their classmates.

SPRING PRODUCTION

The Seussification of Romeo & Juliet

A whimsical reinvention of Shakespeare’s tragic love story, complete with rhymed couplets, creative wordplay, and fantastical machines - similar to something Dr. Seuss might have come up with if he ever had his way with the script. Students (grades 1-12) enrolled in the School of the Performing Arts in Spring 2020 will be eligible to audition. Auditions will be held Friday, March 6th.

SPRING CABARET

SOPA Cabaret presents A Brand New Day: Broadway Musicals of the 21st Century 

In this original School of the Performing Arts Cabaret, Metropolis students are featured performing along with Voice Faculty Tiffany Gates and Nathan W. Brown as they sing and dance on the Metropolis stage celebrating the Broadway music of the last 20 years. This Cabaret includes songs from Broadway musicals that debuted in the year 2000 until today, including shows like HamiltonWickedDear Evan HansenMean GirlsHairspray, and more!
