Position:  Associate Artistic Director

Position Status:  Part-time permanent

Reports to: Executive Artistic Director

Metropolis Performing Arts Centre is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in the heart of downtown Arlington Heights. It houses a 329-seat theater space as well as a full school of performing arts that includes drama, dance, and music lessons. We have a collaborative, fast-paced work environment staffed with professionals who love the arts!

Roles & Responsibilities
Programming - Produced Department
● Partner with Artistic Director and Lead Artistic Associate to research and present future shows opportunities and formulate season models that culminate in finalization of season selection
       ○ Work with APM to secure rights for shows
● Work with Lead Artistic Associate to coordinate Artistic Associates meetings as well as to lead break-out sessions Programming - Presented Department
● Work with Production Manager and Assistant Production Manager to explore and secure short-run theatrical options in order to reflect diversification of offerings when possible within the programming calendar
● Work with PM and APM assisting with artists, management and related execution of shows
● Contribute to Presented season program planning specifically to develop season programming that reflects artist variety and diversity.
      ○ Research prospective Presented Department artists and programming.
● Guide collaboration between Presented Department acts and the School to maximize institutional opportunities.

Artistic Initiatives
● Explore the creation of play readings/new works programs
● Explore and attend non-Metropolis productions

● Explore partnerships with other theaters and organizations for presented programming, school programs as well as reaching out to the community in order to maximize impact of the potential program.
● Lead brainstorming sessions for other initiatives with Artistic Director, Operations Director, Artistic Associates and other senior staff.

Production Roles
● Assist with show pre-production
     ○ Attend and contribute to meetings with Artistic Director, Creative teams, Design team, Production staff, Casting Director, and others
■ Work with Assistant Production Manager to provide input on artistic department projects, coordinate artistic staff deliverables, and align show materials with overall artistic direction

      ○ Working with Artistic Director and Production Manager, communicating with Creative and Design teams and Production staff

● Assist with Casting pre-production
     ○ Work with Casting Director to receive and review actor submissions for individual shows and overall seasons
     ○ Work with Casting Director to analyze per-show needs and seek role candidates to fulfill casting objectives
     ○ Collaborate with Casting Director in order to make casting successful in terms of recruiting diverse talent, securing appropriate audition location and staff and other actions as needed

● Attend Casting Calls
● Attend Orientation Meetings
● Attend select rehearsals, working in conjunction with the Artistic Director and Director
     ○ Assist Artistic Director with the generation and communication of notes
     ○ On occasion and as needed, the Associate Artistic Director will be charged to develop and deliver their own notes to Director, Music Director, Choreographer, Cast or Crew

● Attend select Tech Week rehearsals, working in conjunction with the Artistic Director and Director
● Attend select shows
● Assist with Curtain Speeches or House Announcements
● Assist House Management (rare but important)
● Lead post-show analysis, create post-show reports in digital format Administration
● Maintain records relating to programming, AAD initiatives and activities
● Attend staff meetings
● Meet with Executive Operations Director and/or other Senior Staff as needed
      ○ Substitute for Artistic Director when needed

● Oversight of paperwork, contract execution, etc.
     ○ Establish and maintain archives of past and current productions

Commitment:
● Average 20 hours per week - varying with current programming
● Flexible schedule to permit acceptance of external or internal acting and artistic roles that do not interfere with essential functions of the position.

● Able to handle multiple tasks with accuracy and establish and meet deadlines in a timely manner
● High professional standards with acute attention to details
● Exceptional communication and collaborative skills with a demonstrated ability to lead, manage and motivate people
● Excellent interpersonal skills to build collaborative relationships with both internal and external artistic teams.


Qualifications:
● 5 years or more diverse experience in a lead production planning and execution role preferred
● Experience hiring and managing production designers, creative teams, design teams and production staff
● A thorough knowledge of the methods, practices and techniques used in the creation of stage productions
● Strong commitment to leading with Equity, Diversity and Inclusion principles
